Second graders have been using what they've learned about nouns, verbs, and adjectives to work on building better sentences in their independent writing. We practiced answering some of the "who, what, where, when, why and how" questions in various sentences. Then students were asked to choose a sentence from their writing journal and use some of those questions to build a more sophisticated sentence.
During math, students were presented with a picture of an abacus which showed 651. They were asked to use their understanding of place value to describe how the picture represented that number. Then we used an electronic abacus on an ipad to build and identify other large numbers.
