During the months of November and December, students have mastered a tremendous amount of material. They have reviewed and practiced basic multiplication and division concepts, worked with number and picture patterns, used input/output tables, and completed a unit on graphing. Students used Graph Club 2.0 to create various graphs, and they focused determining which graph to use for a given set of data. Students will also be learning to use several methods for solving multi-digit multiplication problems. They should continue practicing basic multiplication facts over the next few weeks because fact fluency will really help them with the more advanced problems to come.
We have covered quite a bit of content in a fairly short period of time! Students have been reviewing properties of addition and multiplication, and have been working with prime and composite numbers. They have worked with whole number and decimal place value and compared/ordered whole numbers and decimals. They have found both whole number and decimal sums and differences, and used what they know to create and solve multi-step addition and subtraction story problems.
We will soon begin finding products and quotients of smaller numbers, so students should continue practicing their basic multiplication facts through the 12s. Our next multiplication speed test will be on Friday, October 28th. The fourth grade compacted math group is off to a great start! We have reviewed and extended our understanding of whole number place value and our base ten number system, and the students did a wonderful job on their first assessment! We are now beginning to explore and study decimal place value. Students will be expected to demonstrate fact fluency this year, so please be sure they are practicing multiplication facts frequently. A few minutes every day is better than an extended amount of time less often. Flash cards, websites, and apps are all great ways to practice.
I must offer you my sincerest apologies! When the snow came in January and February and we missed many school days, I also missed updating this blog. Once I got out of my routine, I neglected to update this site in March and April as well. I am very sorry if you've been checking for updates and seeing no new posts. Rather than try to go far back in time to tell you what we've been studying, I will just begin with April. Again, I apologize for the lack of communication.
During the beginning of April, fourth graders finished up the fraction computation unit. They successfully mastered addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. Next, students completed a unit about measurement including both the U.S. Customary and Metric Systems. They also practiced using a timeline to calculate elapsed time. We have recently been solving problems involving area and perimeter. |
