During math this week, students continued to practice using the properties of addition and multiplication. They also played a game to learn about using function machines or in/out tables to continue and extend patterns. We played a Kahoot game using the ipads to help students review and prepare for the unit test. They took their unit test on Thursday.
This week, fourth graders have been learning about the properties of addition and multiplication. They reviewed some properties they learned last year, and we added the distributive and associative properties. We played several games to practice identifying and defining the properties, and we began working with number patterns. Students will take a test on multiplication, division, properties, and number patterns next Wednesday. They should continue practicing their basic multiplication facts, and they will take a speed next next Friday.
This week, fourth graders have been using the traditional algorithm to solve long division problems. Although this was quite challenging for them on the first day, by the end of the week they were feeling confident about this skill. They also learned how to use estimation and multiplication to check their division answers, so they are able to practice on their own anytime. Students were reminded about how important it is to have good recall of their multiplication facts since they will be using them so much while multiplying and dividing larger numbers. We also spent time discussing and practicing the parts of a division equation which include the dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder.
Students also practiced identifying and creating balanced equations, and we discussed the difference between expressions and equations. |
