Math classes were a little different this week because each of the fourth grade classes went on a field trip on different days. Thursday was the first day that all of the students were together for math. Students spent time earlier in the week printing their graphs on the color printer in the library. They also solved the word problems they created in their notebooks a few weeks ago. We finished playing the Hula Hoop Estimates game, and we caught up on corrections that needed to be made to some papers. On Thursday, students took their unit test on graphing. We went over the questions and answers together on Friday.
Fourth graders continued working with graphs this week. They reviewed line plots, which they learned about in third grade, and discussed which types of data lend themselves to the use of line plots. Next, students reviewed what they have learned this year about line graphs and when to use them (for changes over time). They worked very hard on an activity for which they had to match a line graph to a given scenario then match it to a table of data. Students were also introduced to circle graphs or pie charts, and practiced reading them. Finally, students collected data of their own and used a software program called Graph Club to create their own graphs.
Students began a unit on graphing this week. After collecting data about the types of graphs students remembered, we created a frequency table and turned the data into a bar graph. Next, students created a pop-up bar graph and put it into their notebooks. We were a little rushed at the end, so next week we will take care of any necessary finishing touches. Students also continued practicing estimation of whole number sums and differences and multi-step problem solving this week. They created word problems of their own which will be solved by classmates next week. They also played an estimation game called “Hop, Skip, and Jump” and solved word problems with partners. Due to the holiday on Monday and the field trip on Thursday, students only had math three times this week. They accomplished quite a bit of learning in such a short time!
Fourth graders reviewed and practiced for their unit test on decimals this week. The test was given on Wednesday, and they will come home in next week's folder. We also began using estimation to find sums and differences of whole numbers. We played a game using hula hoops to match problems and solutions. |
