Fourth graders have been reviewing estimation and computation of whole number sums and differences. They have also reviewed even and odd numbers and been introduced to prime and composite numbers and prime factorization. They have practiced identifying and creating equivalent equations by playing a game called "Equal Schmequal."
Fourth graders have spent the past week reviewing and practicing estimation and calculation of whole number sums and differences. Next week, we will be working with multiplication and division of whole numbers. Our whole numbers will be relatively small for now, but we will be increasing the level of sophistication later this year. Please be sure to have your child practice basic multiplication facts for 5 minutes or so each day. A few minutes every day is more effective that 20 or 30 minutes once a week. Fact fluency will truly pay off as we progress through the year!
Fourth graders will be assessed on decimal number sense and computation this week. We will review addition and subtraction of whole numbers briefly next week before beginning our work with multiplication and division.
If your child has not already been working on multiplication facts at home, now is the time to really get going on those. I can't emphasize enough the importance of fact fluency as we move into increasingly sophisticated skills and concepts over the next few months. Just five to ten minutes a few times each week will have a huge impact on fact mastery. Flash cards, websites such as xtramath.org, apps on your phone or tablet, etc. are all great ways to practice multiplication facts. |
