Fourth graders studied probability this week. After reviewing the terms they learned last year to describe the chances of a particular outcome, we began using fractions to be more specific about probability. We also used dice and spinners to contrast theoretical probability and experimental probability. Students began determining all the possible outcomes for various situations, and tree diagrams were introduced as a tool to help organize the data to reach that goal. Next week, students will review fractions and decimal number sense and probability before taking the unit test on Wednesday.
Fourth graders have been working on fraction and decimal number sense. We have used manipulatives (circles and fraction strips) to create and compare fractions, find equivalent fractions, put fractions into lowest terms/simplest form, and change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. Once students seemed able to easily visualize many fractions, we used other strategies including Least Common Multiple and Greatest Common Factor. We will continue to practice working with fractions next week.
