Fifth graders spent the week practicing with fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios. We focused most of our efforts on comparing and ordering them. We played a Jeopardy game using the Smart Board, and we played a game during which individual students earned a prize for every five questions they answered correctly. Students completed their unit test on Thursday.
Fifth graders were introduced to ratios and solving problems with ratios this week. In addition, they used what they know about fractions and decimals to begin working with percentages. These are usually challenging concepts for students, but this group has a strong foundation with what they learned about fractions and decimals last year. They are doing a wonderful job! We will continued to practice with ratios, fractions, decimals, and percentages into next week. Students will take a unit test next Thursday.
Fifth graders worked on comparing and ordering fractions and decimals this week. While many different strategies were used, most students discovered that changing all of the numbers to decimals makes comparing and ordering much easier. We used calculators to practice changing fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions in isolation. Students also worked with partners to practice ordering sets of decimals and fractions. They also used various models to represent both fractions and decimals including circles, grids, and number lines. If they did not finish the assignment in class, they were asked to take it home to finish over the weekend.
Fifth graders missed math twice this week due to their field trip and the early release day. Students went over the questions they missed on last Friday's test. They also began comparing and ordering fractions and decimals which we will continue next week. |
