Fifth graders are now working with both models and the algorithm to divide fractions and mixed numbers. They will spend time solving word problems which will require them to decide whether multiplication or division is necessary. Students will be taking a test Friday which will include all four operations with fractions.
Fifth graders have been working on multiplication of fractions with and without models this week. This concept requires a thorough understanding of fraction concepts, and it is historically a challenge for most students. While we can agree that the traditional algorithm is MUCH easier than drawing models, models are a required part of the curriculum and do provide major conceptual benefits. The algorithm will certainly be taught and used, but please give your child the time needed to develop the pictorial representations, too. This will really pay off when they are solving word problems and need to visualize the problem to determine which operation to use. We will continue working with fraction multiplication next week.
Fifth graders completed an assessment on order of operations, powers and exponents, perfect squares, and mathematical properties this week. We are beginning to multiply and divide fractions, first with models and pictures then following the traditional algorithm.
