Fifth graders have continued to study and explore the defining characteristics of various quadrilaterals this week. They also reviewed strategies for finding area and perimeter of rectangles. They used area and perimeter skills to solve some very challenging problems. They also discovered the formula for finding the area of triangles by exploring triangles, squares, and rectangles on the Smartboard.
Students spent time this week reviewing some of the things they learned about triangles last year. They also refreshed their memories about how use protractors to measure angles. We worked as a group to sort a large pile of figures into the following groups: polygons, quadrilaterals, parallelograms, trapezoids, kites, rhombi, rectangles, and squares. Students must know the defining features of each type of quadrilateral. Students completed notes about triangles and quadrilaterals and put them into their math notebooks.
Students continued to practice multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers with and without models early in the week. They also played a game of Kahoot on the ipads which reviewed everything they needed to know for their test on Wednesday. The skills assessed on the test included addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals, fractions, and numbers.
Students also began reviewing some geometry concepts they learned last year. These included the identification of polygons and finding congruence. We will be studying geometry concepts for the next several weeks. |
