Mrs. Holloway’s students had the tables turned on them during math when we gave them the answers and asked them to create the problems! We modeled for students how a word problem could be written so that a particular answer is given. Then we gave students several answers and asked them to write the word problems for them. This is a very tough skill for first graders.
Students also created crystal snowflakes during science. We dissolved Borax (a laundry additive) in very hot water. Then students dangled a pipe cleaner snowflake in the solution and observed it. Overnight, crystals formed on the pipe cleaners. Students made some very insightful observations about how the snowflakes had changed!
