This week, students worked on an engineering challenge. Given toothpicks and marshmallows, students attempted to build the tallest tower possible. Since we haven’t done very many of these challenges, students struggled with finding a successful design. We gave lots of suggestions to get them going in the right direction, and many groups found a solution that worked. It is very clear that we need to do lots more of these activities. The more students practice, the more successful they will be. We will continue presenting engineering challenges as the year progresses, and we encourage you to help students practice at home by using Legos, play dough, sticks, straws, toothpicks---anything that looks like fun!
Mrs. Holloway also modeled several logic problems related to a costume party. Using students as examples, she gave several clues about which students arrived first to the party or left the party last. Students told us how their classmates should be arranged in order to match the clues. Next, we gave students a sheet with a variety of characters which they cut out and arranged according to the given clues.
