Mrs. Holloway’s class worked on two very challenging math exemplars this week. One required students to decide how many trips it would take for a canoe which could hold three people at a time to move fifteen people across a river. There was only one solution to this problem, and student drawings helped them solve the problem. The other challenge required students to decide how many fish could be caught if four boats with three fishermen allowed each person to catch three fish. There were many, many answers to this question.
We also worked on an engineering activity this week. Students were given tape, popsicle sticks, and two sheets of paper and asked to create a structure to protect a Native American canoe from rising flood waters. We used a toy canoe to test their structures.
