Third graders had lots of fun this week trying to figure out how to use tape and only ONE piece of paper to hold a textbook off of their desks. The most successful designs used one or more columns, and they discovered that wider columns worked better than narrow columns. Of course this led to a discussion of the use of columns in ancient Greek architecture, and we watched a brief video clip about The Parthenon in Athens. We also looked at pictures of Greek urns and mosaics and discussed common themes. Students used paper to decorate an urn to show at least one human characteristic and one physical characteristic of ancient Greece.
Later in the week, we discussed the Olympics and contrasted the ancient events with modern-day events. We watched a brief video clip. Then, we used cotton balls, paper plates, and straws to simulate several Olympic events. These included the shot put, discus, javelin throwing, and long jump.
