Again this year, I will be collaborating with Mrs. S. White to provide differentiated instruction during Language Arts and Math. I will work in her classroom twice a week for each subject. Third graders are occasionally also taken to the resource room to work on additional projects as needed. Already this year, the entire class has participated in a brief lesson to help them extend and enrich the vocabulary they use to describe characters from their reading. As we read Julius, Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes we made a chart of sophisticated and advanced words that could be used in place of more basic words. During math, students have been reviewing and practicing four ways to write a number (standard, word, picture, and expanded).
I must offer you my sincerest apologies! When the snow came in January and February and we missed many school days, I also missed updating this blog. Once I got out of my routine, I neglected to update this site in March and April as well. I am very sorry if you've been checking for updates and seeing no new posts. Rather than try to go back in time to tell you what we've been studying for months, I will just begin with April. Again, I apologize for the lack of communication.
Third graders have enjoyed a variety of critical and creative thinking activities intended to help them stretch themselves and rise to new challenges. These have included Stories with Holes, Logic Links, Hink Pinks (rhyming riddles/synonyms), Flip Flop Figure (spatial reasoning/problem solving), and Synonym Strings to name a few. Most recently, the third grade math group has been creating their own multiplication and division word problems. They have been using Microsoft Word to type them. We will revise and edit them together before students print them to share with their classmates. We didn’t quite finish last week, so we will hopefully be able to finish on Monday. Afterwards, we will begin multiplying 2-digit by 1-digit factors.
